Traveling to La Penita

Travel from the airport to Jaltemba Bay - La Penita,
Nayarit
Renting a car is highly recommended if you are
here for two weeks or longer. Book early,
especially November through March. Vehicles with
a high wheel base are the best choice due to road
conditions, especially to secluded areas.

From the airport, taxi service is available. However,
if you want to negotiate a better deal, cross the
pedestrian overpass to the other side of the
highway. Agree on a price before you leave.

Buses run regularly and cost approximately 60
pesos per person. Take a taxi from the airport to
the bus terminal in Vallarta, and then another from
the top of the avenida in La Peñita to your rental.

La Penita is about a one hour drive.

Maps are hard to come by in La Penita, so be sure
to get them before you leave. Visit your local AAA
or purchase some in Vallarta before you leave.

Money

La Penita has two ATMS, you get the best exchange rate
this way: at the Bancomer bank beside highway 200 in the
first block south of the main street (“la Avenida”) and a
Banamex machine around the corner on the Avenida next
to the CMQ drugstore. The other is in Guayabitos at the
Villas Buena Vida by the ocean.

You will need your passport to cash traveler’s cheques at
the bank but, you must have an account to exchange cash.

Paying in US dollars often results in paying a higher
premium, but US dollars are accepted with local merchants
and hotels. Canadian money however, is NOT accepted.

Tipping is the same as up north for services - 15 to 20%.

Being a cash society, not many accept credit cards.

Be sure to take small bills and coins as many vendors will
not have change for large bills.

Many of the locals are very friendly and
generous and family oriented people. Many will
work with you to communicate. You can
pantomime, draw pictures, or use a
english/spanish dictionary. Many will be patient
and helpful with your vocabulary and
